South Korea’s most populated province contains some of the country’s very important cultural treasures, including forts, palaces and prehistoric relics.

Discover a vast trove of riches in Gyeonggi, South Korea’s northwesternmost province. Gyeonggi translates to “province surrounding the capital” and its borders skirt around South Korea’s capital city, Seoul. With its high population and ancient cities, Gyeonggi is renowned for its remarkable heritage.

Get an idea of 18th-century South Korea when you explore the province’s capital, Suwon. Established in the 18th century as a military stronghold and royal shrine, Suwon presents a vivid combination of old and new. Discover the province’s modern resorts, coastal cities and traditional towns. Investigate the Hwaseong Fortress enclosing the old city, its imposing stone walls penetrated by the modern developments of Suwon’s streetscape. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, prized for beautifully intact architecture and unbeatable vantage points. Follow the old city walls and look out across the steadfast Joseon-era boundary.

Suwon’s museums offer fascinating insights into the city’s cultural heritage, from the days of King Jeongjo to the modern reign of Samsung electronics. Visit Yongin to experience modern and historic Gyeonggi side by side at the Everland amusement park and the Korean Folk Village.

Gyeonggi’s high population density doesn’t mean the province is without natural appeal. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) alongside the country’s border with North Korea and the wetlands of Sihwa Lake are ecological havens.

Visit some of Seoul’s satellite cities, such as Anyang and Bundang. In Guri, find a traditional marketplace and pretty riverside parks. Explore meandering canals in the seaside city of Ansan and learn about ancient traditions in Paju.

Nearby Incheon is known as South Korea’s international gateway and keeps its local tradition for ceramics alive with pottery programs and galleries. Experience the futuristic design of the modern metropolis of Songdo.

Reach Gyeonggi via Incheon International Airport or catch the train from major cities into Suwon, Icheon and Bundang. Choose from resort-style accommodations, modern hotel complexes or relaxed traditional lodgings.

With rich history, family-friendly attractions and natural splendor, Gyeonggi is an exciting getaway outside of Seoul’s urban sprawl.
