Grassy hills and dark green mountains rise above a dramatic coastline in the seaside district of Wanli. This jaw-dropping topography serves as a continual reminder of the district’s intimate association with nature. Discover ethereal scenery along the seashore of Wanli and see some of the world’s last-surviving Futuro architecture. Kick back on sandy beaches, visit hidden temples and walk amid postcard-perfect countryside.
Yehliu Geopark stretches over a mile-long cape and dazzles with hoodoo rocks formed by centuries of geological movement and sea erosion. Follow boardwalks to natural landmarks with fascinating names such as Candle Rocks, Fairy’s Shoe, Mushroom Rocks and Queen’s Head. Enjoy panoramic mountain and sea views from a hilltop observation deck. Guides are on hand to provide information about conservation efforts.
At the entrance to the park, Yehliu Ocean World has educational exhibits about the marine life that inhabits Taiwanese waters. Highlights include displays of green and hawksbill turtles in addition to acrobatic dolphin and sea lion shows. Visit the colorful Yehliu Baoan Temple, built in the 1800s from the materials of an abandoned boat.
Another curious attraction is the Wanli UFO Village, home to the abandoned Futuro buildings. The flying saucer-shaped houses were designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen but are now derelict. The village fronts Green Bay Beach, where surfers ride rolling waves and paragliding flights land. Rent a bike and pedal along the seafront Jinshan-Wanli Cycling Route. Stop at Guihou Fishing Harbor to watch fishing activities and dine at seafood restaurants.
Lush grasslands, mystical forests and waterfalls await in Yangmingshan National Park. Within the park is the dormant volcano crater of Huangzui Mountain. Experience Buddhist serenity at Lingquan Temple and pay your respects at the mountainside Wuchih Mountain Military Cemetery.
