Climb up the colossal rock that towers over Cefalu to tour the remains of two ancient sites. They were built for worship and to protect the town from attack.

Wander through the ruins of an ancient Greek megalithic temple and investigate the remains of an old fort when you climb La Rocca. This rocky headland is Cefalu’s most prominent feature and rises 886 feet (270 meters) above the town.

The Normans created one of their great strongholds here, and the fort is considered to be one of the world’s most impressive natural defensive bases.

To reach the fort, climb the long staircase cut into the rock. You should allow about half an hour to get to the top and be sure to wear sturdy footwear. Your efforts will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Sicilian coastline stretching out below you. Look west on a clear day and in the distance you will see the coast around Palmero, while to the east you can make out the peninsula of the Capo d’Orlando.

Stroll across the fort’s ramparts high above the town and see if you can work out the layout of the former defensive building. Much of the structure has crumbled away and its rooms and towers are tricky to discern.

Make your way to the Tempo di Diana. The sanctuary is made of huge interlocking stones without the use of cement or concrete. Walk through the temple’s stone portal and into the remains of its rooms. Scholars aren’t agreed on the exact age of the building, but some date it back to 800 B.C.

You certainly won’t miss La Rocca when you visit Cefalu, because it can be seen from almost everywhere in town. Avoid making the strenuous journey to the top during middle of the day when the temperatures are at their warmest.
