Home to Kaohsiung’s Central Park, the Cianjin District is one of the most scenic parts of this big, industrial port city in southwestern Taiwan. Explore the banks of the “Love River” by day and walk under an illuminated arcade by night in this vibrant area of downtown Kaohsiung.
Although the Cianjin, or “Qianjin,” District is one of the smallest in the downtown area, it still exists of some 20 villages and there are countless restaurants, snack food bars, bakeries, markets, department stores to discover and enjoy.
Spend some time in Central Park with its lake, labyrinth and dancing water fountains. The Central Park Station KMRT exit that deposits you at the edge of the park is shaped like a magical, terraced garden and is an attraction in itself. After sunset, the park’s Urban Spotlight Arcade on the south side becomes a romantic spot for an evening stroll. Admire public artworks along the way.
Take a little detour to the Holy Rosary Cathedral Minor Basilica or zoom up to the observation deck of the piercing Sky Tower in the adjacent Lingya District. Architecture lovers will appreciate the nearby Kaohsiung Main Public Library, with its awe-inspiring interior courtyard.
To explore the northern half of the Cianjin District, head for the City Council Station, then walk to the Kaohsiung Li De Baseball Stadium. Another major attraction here is the Kaohsiung Museum of Labor which also showcases Taiwanese textiles. There are labor-themed sculptures and murals outside. At the end of the afternoon, explore the lively Liuhe Tourist Night Market in the adjacent XinXing District.
The following morning, walk along the banks of the Ai River, also known as the “Love River.” Take a “Love Boat” or gondola ride to enjoy the city skyline views from the river and visit the largest harbor in Taiwan.
Love River Park, just to the south of the Cianjin District, celebrates the cultural and economic importance of this canal and has a bustling night market with food stalls.
While the Cianjin District isn’t the first port of call to most visitors of Kaohsiung, it has plenty of cultural and natural charms to keep you there for days.
