Whether you're seeking watersports, a gentle splash in the surf or simply the feel of soft sand between your toes, visit La Barrosa Beach. This long, wide expanse extends for approximately 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) along the Andalusian coast of the Costa de la Luz.
Find your spot on the beach and relax. Roll out your towel on the sand or rent a shaded sun lounger. When you want to explore the area, go for a stroll along the sandy shoreline and up to the Torre del Puerco. This well-preserved watchtower was part of a 16th-century coastal surveillance system to protect against pirates from North Africa. Walk through the dunes that flank the beach and look for flora such as marine and coastal juniper.
Bring a picnic with you or dine in a beach bar or restaurant on the promenade. Sample traditional tapas such as tuna and octopus dishes.
Due to the strong Levante winds, especially during the winter, La Barrosa is a popular watersports destination. Try your hand at sailing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. Go on a guided kayak or boat tour to the small island of Sancti Petri. It is located a short distance offshore and is home to the remains of a 17th-century castle. This ancient fortification was built over an important Phoenician temple where the Romans believed the god Hercules was buried.
Come back to La Barrosa Beach and continue with your sunbathing before taking a refreshing dip in the water. Note there is a lifeguard present here during most months of the year. Other services include drinking fountains, first aid stations, ice-cream kiosks and children's playgrounds.
La Barrosa Beach lies 5 miles (8 kilometers) west of the town of Chiclana de la Frontera. From there travel by bus, taxi or rental car to the beach. Park in the free parking lots. People with limited mobility can get on the beach by using the four access points for the disabled.
