With its serene ambiance and spectacular views, Freedom Beach provides a less-crowded alternative to the busier bays in the surrounding area. Since the only way to visit Freedom Beach is via a longtail boat trip, it has become something of a hidden gem. Stroll along the 985 foot (300 meter) stretch of soft, white sand to appreciate the scenery from every angle.
From the center of the beach, turn around to admire the spectacular vistas of granite rocks and exotic vegetation which frame it. Spot the quaint and colorful boats of fishers and guides docked in the shallow water. You can hike through the dense jungle backing onto the rear of the beach, before cooling down in the cool, clear sea.
Bring snorkeling gear and dive into the water to see schools of colorful fish swimming around you. Dry off on the sand and rent deck chairs for sunbathing or lay down a blanket for a picnic in this idyllic setting. A restaurant serving typical Thai dishes and drinks can also be found on the bay.
Read a book and enjoy the relative solitude and peace of this hidden treasure of a beach. Soccer games and beach volleyball often take place here, allowing visitors to stay active.
The best way to travel to the site is via long-tail boats departing from neighboring Patong Beach. Note that these boat trips are only available in high season, typically from December to June. Negotiate a fee for a return trip and make sure you wear beach-appropriate clothing as you’ll be disembarking into shallow water.
Freedom Beach is just north of Karon, in the southwestern corner of Phuket Island. From the heart of the town, drive north for 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) to reach Patong Beach and then catch a boat from its southern end. Nearby attractions to include on your Phuket Island itinerary include Karon Beach, the Banzaan Fresh Market and Jungceylon Shopping Center.
