The city of Saguenay in Québec is nestled in the fjords along the Saguenay River at the entrance to Lac-Saint-Jean, a lake big enough to be an inland sea. Downstream, the river flows into the St. Lawrence River, creating a combination of fresh and salt water. Fish year-round for an interesting variety of species.
Beluga whales create a spectacular sight when they venture up the river, while salmon and trout display their determination of reaching their spawning grounds. Along the length of the river is Saguenay Fjord National Park, dotted with towns and villages. Use Saguenay as your base while you discover the region’s myriad attractions.
Within the total area of more than 40,000 square miles (105,000 square kilometers), there’s plenty to see by road, cycle or foot. Take advantage of luggage shuttle services for cyclists to have your items waiting for you at overnight stops at some of the 15 towns along the way.
Three downtown districts arise from the merger of municipalities to form the city of Saguenay: La Baie, Jonquière and Chicoutimi. Engage in the area’s lively community, with plenty of social and cultural events and an excellent restaurant scene.
To get an overall interpretation of the Saguenay fjords, the Fjord Museum, equipped with an aquarium, provides a learning environment for all ages. Armed with information, travel the 146-mile (235-kilometer) Fjord Route. Pack your camera for the many unique photo opportunities.
