One of the city’s main universities and numerous parks and galleries make Gwanak-gu a fascinating place to visit in Seoul. Green hilly mounds surround the area, which has a youthful student atmosphere. Gaze up at Mount Gwanak, whose dramatic peak looms over the southern part of the district.
Go on a guided campus tour of Seoul National University to get a glimpse into the city’s educational customs. Admire the intriguing architecture of the college buildings, framed by a background of undulating peaks. Among the attractions on the campus is the Seoul National University Museum of Art, which showcases works by students and acclaimed international artists. Marvel at the gallery’s innovative glass façade, through which you can see its steel frames.
Understand a little about the region’s history with a trip to the Gyujanggak Library of Seoul National University, which dates back to 1776. It contains some of the country’s most important records and books. Go on a shopping spree across the commercial zones of Daehak and Seorim.
Look to the future in Seoul Science Park. Bring your kids to the museum, where they can play with interactive exhibits and investigate the building blocks of life and technology. Watch them construct an arch-shaped bridge, test gravity and play ball games. Inspect some of the impressive pieces on display in the Seoul Museum of Art–Nam Seoul Annex and participate in some of its workshops and classes.
Gwanak-gu is just south of the Han River, in the center of Seoul. It stands between Dongjak-gu, Seocho-gu and Geumcheon-gu. Take the Green Line or Blue line of the metro to one of the stations or ride a bus here. Travel through the city to see nearby zones such as Seonyudo, Yongsan-gu and Jongno-gu.
