For one of the most iconic sights in Xi’an City Center, visit the Bell Tower, whose traditional tiered architecture dates back to the 14th century. Historical displays fill the exhibition halls of its floors, which provide excellent views of the area. See the majestic structure at night, when it beams with bright light.
Marvel at the sheer size of the structure, which is 130 feet (40 meters) tall and stands at the junction of several main streets in the geographical center of Xi’an. Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang constructed it of brick and timber in the early Ming dynasty. Notice the regal appearance of the gold décor of the roof and the red columns supporting the traditional bell tower’s two stories.
Pass through the arched walkway carved into the center of the rectangular platform at its base. Enter the impressive site through the door in this pedestrian route and climb up the spiraling staircase. A plaque on the second floor explains how the building was moved to its current spot in 1582 to correspond with the changing geographical center of the city.
Study the various sculptures and engravings marking the walls and doors that tell folk tales from China. Musical performances with traditional Chinese instruments often take place here throughout the day.
Outside the building, appreciate the charming set of gardens with fresh green grass and floral displays. In spring, plum blossoms create a stunning display. As evening falls, a network of elegant lanterns illuminates the fortress. The site opens daily from morning until evening, closing a little earlier in winter.
The Bell Tower is in the heart of the Lianhu district in the Xi’an City Center. Ride the metro to the Bell Tower station and walk south to the site. Alternatively, travel by bus to a nearby stop. While in this central part of the city, see other neighboring spots such as the Drum Tower, the Great Mosque of Xi’an and the New City Plaza.
