With its multi-domed roof peering above the central Kuala Lumpur skyline, the Wilayah Mosque (aka Federal Territory Mosque) is among the city’s most iconic highlights. Muslim and non-Muslims are welcomed to the large structure, recognizable by its pair of minarets of Ottoman-Malay design rising far above the main building. While visiting the Federal Territory Mosque go on a guided tour of the complex with a volunteer to learn about its cultural importance.

When you get to the site, relax next to the water feature and fountain in front of it. Capture photos of the beautiful mosque reflected in the surface of the water. Admire the light-blue domes that decorate the roof beneath golden minarets. At the entrance stands a majestic staircase leading into this impressive house of worship.

Enter the mosque and attend a service, contemplating religion and life. Gaze up at the interior of the main dome from within and marvel at the décor and architectural flourishes. Spot the mihrab, a semi-circular opening that indicates the direction of Mecca, toward which Muslims direct their prayers at multiple times during the day.

Make sure to dress conservatively and remove your shoes to respect the rules of the mosque, which is an active place of worship. Borrow robes from the complex if necessary. Tours of the mosque are available daily from morning until early evening. The temple was built from 1998 to 2000 and has a capacity for up to 17,000 visitors at one time.

The Wilayah Mosque is in the Kampung Baru district, a little northwest of the city center of Kuala Lumpur. Travel by bus to a nearby stop or take the train to Raja Chulan Station. The KLCC tram stop also serves the area. While you’re in this part of the city, visit some of the nearby landmarks, including KLCC Park, the Royal Selangor Golf Club and the Aquaria KLCC.
